thanks daisydee I think you might be surprised what you could grow in your climate. The Cycads grow in Japan where it snows and many of the plants in my garden are native of South Africa where it also gets very cold.

I like this, but I do think in small gardens native plants sometimes look better in their preferred environment. This could look very sad in a long cold/wet British winter.

No probs in Auckland then, aye Jcisme2? I have all of those plants but they are much smaller and all are potted and must suffer thro our long dark and very cold winter here in Canada. They're houseplants but I put them outdoors with cover in the summer and they really appreciate that. I have two cycads, and my agave is planted in the garden (they will make it thro our very cold winters relatively unprotected as long as they are dry) but I will be digging it up to keep indoors this winter. My fave is the beaucarnea...mine is only a couple of feet tall.
