My front garden has 8 cordylines, the one in the middle of this bed was given to me by my husband on the birth of our second son. It is now dead ???

Not quite, it should come back, glad to see that you have left the trunk in the ground, it will shoot back from below. It may not come back in one trunk, but many shoots, I have lost 6 of mine, I have written a blog about my collection of Cordylines a few months ago. One is already sprouting from below, I posted a picture last week showing the new shoots, they are growing so fast already, there are about 5 of them on the one trunk.
