As the baby worms move away from the cheese-like nursery, taking on an adult compost-worm appetite, they work their way through the core of the fermented compost organic matter.

In summer, when the soil temperature is highest, the entire process takes about 8 weeks (in cooler times, it can take up to 13 weeks) from the fermented compost being placed into the ground, to it being wholly consumed.

After the compost worms have done their thng, earthworms come in to take up residence in larger numbers, so in one sense, the compost worms are like the pioneer species, clearing the way for a more diverse population.
