Thanks PG I dug it my self one January 13 years ago its 4ft deep in the middle If I were to do it again I would not have the 1 ft deep planting shelf would have had it 4ft all over. I have only fallen in once lol.

It is very deep too then - gosh must have been hard work digging that far down - mine is only 1.5 ft deep and remember getting my dad in to dig - saying I wasn't good at getting shape right lol - I cheated by cementing rocks around the top for another few inches of depth. I have almost fell in a few times, must have been cold when you fell in :D

It was very cold PG and getting out was not possible on my own. My garden is on clay but for over 100 years it was very large coal and wood site and parts of my garden was were they left a copse of poplar and willow so its an odd mixture of clay in parts and soft deep humus in others which is how I was able to dig so deep. The depth is why I think my fish have survived for 12 years as they can go deep down in the worst winters.

We have a hell of a lot of clay and sandy soil about one foot down - it was so messy when it was dug out - yes your fish will appreciate the depth - wish mine could be a bit deeper :):):)
