Plenty of scope there for planting! What I might do in your position is, if you're handy, put another one or two rows of bricks down so you can raise the level of soil in that bed, it could be difficult enough to dig through the roots of the tree to produce a good planting hole, but as well as that, the tree roots have likely depleted all the nutrients out of the existing soil, so adding a good load of compost could be something to consider?

thankyou, yes the roots have taken over and yes raising the bed i done the other side where the acer is and have lovely top soil to go on aswell . i think i just might place some ground cover on this bed and maybe a large light or something to brighten it up it is right in the corner and doesnt get much sun .any ideas welcome .
