Are the leaves like that all the way down to the bottom, Salty? Hope one of the pics shows the whole plant, but what are the flowers like? It would be useful if you could post the pics attached to a question too, titled ID needed - that always gets people's attention, we all love trying to ID stuff. But at the moment, its making me think of Nigella... If it has blue or white flowers, could be Nigella sativa, the black cumin plant?

It does look very like nigella, and the seed heads are held in a papery pod. Some of mine do go a dark colour but I think thats more to do with sooty mould.
I think the reason your were told it was physalis originally would be the papery seed case. Common names are often mis used with the botanical names.
I have a lovely cluster of pink hues of this plant as well as gorgeous blues.
