Oooh, goody! Always nice chatting with you Shirley! :))

Oh thanks, Karen ... I have just been cutting down the stalks of Hollyhocks and some Sunflowers ... had to use the tree loppers on some of them! . . . . .

I've spent the last half hour looking at Plantagogo website....again....it's getting ridiculous Shirley! :)) I am actually thinking of taking out everything herbaceous in the big shady border and filling it with Heucheras! I've never really been happy with it and at the moment it looks overgrown and messy. If this wind calms down tomorrow I shall be out there with my secateurs and fork taking up some of the viticella clems which are smothering everything.

Now Karen, stop and think very seriously about making such a huge decision as that one ...you need a contrast in your shady border ... not Heucheras alone surely? ... Plus there wouldn't be much height without the herbaceous plants ! ... I cannot believe you are removing some of your Clem. collection ... off for a lie-down to recover from this news ... lol!

They are just too big Shirley. They grow over my lovely Cotoneasters, smothering them, then they fall over in the wind and flop over everything, and one or two of them are pale flowered so it's not like they add any colour really. I want to be able to see the structure of the small trees and large shrubs. Don't worry, there will still be plenty of clematis in there, you know I have far too many! :)) As for the border....I was thinking of having it more for shrubs and trees and just using heucheras and a few other low growing things for ground level colour. The things that would come out would mostly be pulmonarias...you know,, the dark blue spring flowers. The leaves just sit there all summer, doing not very much. Heucheras would be more interesting and colourful and evergreen. There are a few other things that could come out too...like a persicaria...and some of the irises....there are too many irises...you know they are so beautiful, but they flower for such a short time, and you have to keep dividing them which is always a hard slog as they are so dense rooted and heavy. Oh, that reminds me....I was going to send a bit of my white Iris sibirica to Dotty Daisy. Must get on with that now she's back from her hols. Yes. I think I shall do some 'simplifying' in that long border!

Yes, I can see what you're aiming for ... the Pulmonarias aren't worth their keep really! Euonymous comes to mind for evergreen shrubs... either silver or gold variegated ... or Viburnums ... both of which you probably already have ... I shall be removing some Geraniums tomorrow ... the ones Spritz calls 'anonymous pink' (APG's!) as they barely flowered this year and are past their best really ... then I need to thin out masses of Forget-me-nots and Verbena Bonariensis seedlings ... then all the leaves from neighbour's trees to rake and bag up ... just hope the weather is dry as I have a whole day to myself ... :o)

Oh, that sounds lovely. Sadly I have to go and take a friends mum to Dundee for her bus home to Glasgow this morning, and then a friend is coming over for a chat....but I will be out there all afternoon...lovely day here!
