I just love Delphiniums. I find them difficult to grow well in Scotland. I grow them in pots so that the slugs don't get the young plants!!!!!

I usually get a great show the first year, but they don't come up the second year as they should do, & I think it is because the snails get them when they are just emerging from the ground. From now on, I am going to have to be a lot more vigilant in order to enjoy them the second year.

I spoke to a Delphinium grower and he said to keep them in a pot for the first couple of years until they get a strong large root ball....then put them out into the garden. I did this but had to put them back into a pot to give them a chance against the slugs!!

Good tip from your Delphinium grower Linda; I think I might try that with my Lupins? the slugs always seem to beat me to the post with the plants that I purchase; just love Lupins too!
Rozz.

The Dowdeswelle Delphinium nursery is closed to the public, but for two days annually, on 23rd & 24th December, it opens for the public. As I live just half an hour drive away, I fully intend to visit on one of those days.
