Chilean shrub, growing to six feet, for a sheltered shady spot in moist, peaty soil. Can be difficult to please - this is my third attempt to grow it and the first time it has flowered

Meanie - I saw it last year in the wild, growing in very moist soil in deep shade. I think the trick is not to let it get dry at the root. A friend of mine has it growing beside paving so the roots are under it and have a permanent access to moisture - hers flowers it socks off

Yes, very prickly. It looks very much like a small holly bush until it starts to flower

That's discouraging - I've been after one of these since seeing it in the Jungle at Heligan gardens.
