This is the view from one of my front rooms, out of a side window, looking into the garden next door. Two weeks ago there were two of these big palm trees in that small front garden, but one has since been chopped down, which has opened up the place considerably & given us a better view too.

I think it is more like a sort of date palm, Paul. I will have a look online & see if I can spot it. The cordylines which I am familiar with, have much more slender trunks & finer foliage. In the small seaside city of Napier, which I grew up in, we had these particular trees lining either side of many of the main roads, & they made the whole place look very exotic.

Paul, I am pretty sure this is the Nikau Palm. We have them growing all over the North Island of NZ. Not sure if they would survive the colder winters of most of the South Island.

Lovely view for you - like the tree looks like a cordyline
