In the Wild: Death Camas, Zygadenus elegans

In the Wild: Death Camas, Zygadenus elegans (Zygadenus elegans)

Lovely big yellowish flowers and long straps of leaf. This was my first encounter with this plant. It was very prevalent in the same areas as wild lupines, so liking exposed and dry slopes. Do not touch, another delightful poison.

It was beautiful, thank you. And yes, as many poisonous enough not to handle, this one causes nausea and lowers your temperature. People died often in Idaho eating this mistaking it for an allium. No allium here, so less mistakes. :-)

No Lupins are in the pea family. I think that family is know for edibility, being legumes. No poison.

This particular one pictured is a look alike for a handful of edibles, it has killed often being mistaken. In the nineties it was the finish for that boy in 'Into the Wild', he camped off Stampede trail in Healy, living off wild edibles had a handful of this in the fall.
