There is an alarming hole in the hedge which appeared when they were being trimmed this week!.I had been trying to train it each year...I think my "helper". was a little too enthusiastic .So today had to plant another shrub infront of it which will disguise it as it grows.The one i chose was Photnia Pink Marble,a new variety.

Existing roots are the problem, arent they. I tried to grow a climbing rose next to a big conifer we cut back but it died in the end, just couldnt seem to get going, they need a free root run apparently and its diffiicult for any plant to put down decent roots close to trees but yours is hedging after all so not as bad as a tree and you've fed it phosphate so let's hope its OK :-)

What a shame after all your training. Do you think the Photinia will OK, i.e. not too over-crowded. Just that I've tried to set plants before in this situation and they havent done very well but I guess if you've dug a big, deep hole its roots should get going.
