caterpillar-damaged sensitive ferns

Last year I really tried to get these sensitive ferns (Onoclea sensibilis) nice and big, which basically means giving them tons of water. But they were eaten by caterpillars. By the time I found an earth-friendly solution to the problem it was too late and the damage had been done.

Paul - given enough water - and no caterpillars - these are fabulous ferns. Google them and try to find a photo of a well-established mass. They don't look like a typical fern. Water is the key. We have droughts every summer here and even the wild populations of O. sensibilis really, really suffer - even those growing streamside.
