Breaking out

Last summer a pair of canada geese made a nest in a very accessible place, easily reached by dogs and people alike. As I watched them I thought they had no chance of successfully breeding their brood. However geese make very aggreesive diligent parents and three weeks later, on a very hot afternoon I was delighted to look into the nest and see the first gosling hatch. In this photo it is about one hour old. The second one hatched soon after but the remaining goslings hatched through the night. In the end six healthy goslings took to the water and were reared successfully.

Great picture Psilo..Look at the light in his eye! They nest on the public side of the towpaths here as well, they seem to thrive as there are more of them every year.
