I read your link just now, Pim. I found this is genetic derivative of more common poplar tree. I again found, while reading this article, that thirties in the last century it was a wonderful decade. During that period many important and lasting interventions to our environment has happened (also in former Czechosolvakia). People at that time were just more - sharing, I would say.
We had old alley from Populus deltoides (do not know English name for it, sorry). Since my chidlhood it standed close to our house. Then about 10 years ago came developers, rescued it. Then arrived new inhabitants - usually young, rich, arrogant and just one season was enough for them to pay all important people and cut the whole alley. Their argument was that poplar trees made a mess in their gardens.

Where I live Katarina we have lost 100s of acres of recreational land to housing developers. They have built so many houses that it is Claustrophobic walking down those streets. They did keep many of the mature trees though. The developers were supposed to make a "Green Walk" but they have now squeezed more houses in instead.

These were nor developers who destroyed trees here. But families in houses.
