It is said, poplar trees were brought to Central Europe by old Romans, during their expansion to the North. My country was called Barbaricum, as you could see in The Gladiator. Romans planted poplars along business roads.

We see them here in some parts of our county our land is so flat the trees make a good wind break to help stop the soil being swept off the land ........

There are some near my workplace. Still without leaves, they look good against the sunsets.

Hi Severnside, the same it is here, donĀ“be confused, pleased, by this photo. Our poplar trees are also leavesless. This photo was made last summer. I just illustrated different type of poplar tree, which grows here, as Pimpernel once wrote about Manchester poplar trees, which is common in the UK.

We have loads of poplar trees round here, but not these beautiful columnar ones. In early summer, when they release their seed, the streets of Bologna and all the surrounding countryside look as though they are under snow - it's a bit of a nuisance.
