Gasteria Flowers

Gasteria Flowers

These strangely beautiful individual blossoms (about 2 cm in length) on the flower-spike of this Gasteria spec. show what suggests xerophytic water-conserving constrictions at the mouth of each flower but still allowing access to suitable pollinators. This succulent plant related to the lilies is native to South Africa and is adapted to seasonal rainfall with long periods of drought.
