Put a circle of broken egg shells around it they hate crossing anything sharp. I rinse and save my egg shells all winter for this. Another way is to use a clear plastic litre bottle with both ends cut off.

This and the erm, forgot its name, round it are now in pots, this is a particularly wet area of garden with big lumps of orange clay..... Full rethink now underway, hopefully the dahlia will pull through but it's very damaged......only really stalk left!
