Tetrarch - I believe they are not strong growers and need a sheltered position. Mine is 11 years old now and growing up the post of my pergola. It gets cut back and fed every spring. From memory, it took about three years to settle in before putting on a decent display

Thanks for the encouragement Andrew; I knew they were a bit delicate so will possess my soul in patience..only second year plant! Ive had a real plague of earwigs (among other pests) this year and they have really chewed at my clems!
