Looks interesting,Why don't you use the underside as a shade house,downside might be bugs and debris falling on to the plants below.

That's exactly what I was thinking to do. How nice that you thought of it, too! The sun is pretty intense where I am so shade is always welcome! My plants will have to be pretty well established, most likely, before any amount of shade is produced. I'm a fairly patient person though!

As another thought if that shade was valuable to you,are you familiar with the green greenhouse shading used on glasshouses if a sheet of that was positioned first and your more open one laid over it you would have the best of both worlds instantly.
