Looks like a baby tree...not entirely sure what sort though, perhaps a rowan tree?

I think it's some sort of tree,Louisa and thats why I moved out of the roses way !

I love baby trees, you could try and bonsai it? I potted up a silver birch seedling years ago and still have it in a pot, it's about a foot high but the pot restricts its growth and I enjoy having a mini birch!

Don't know how to do that Louisa....will you teach me.? Quite like the idea of that..... is it difficult? :-)

It's not really difficult, you'd need to take out the growing tip and encourage the side branches to grow. It does take a few years, you can get wire to shape the branches into a more horizontal shape to simulate an older tree. You have to root prune every year or so too, so you're restricting the top and bottom growth at the same time. But you need to feed the tree to encourage healthy growth at the same time as you're training it into an attractive small shape. There's probably loads of info about bonsai online. I learned what I know from books before the days of internet and spent years training small trees. Then vine weevil arrived and killed them all. I was very upset!:(((

Sounds difficult to me L, don't even know what "root pruning" means...... dumbo or what? lol will get a bonsai book tho and perhaps have a go, nothing gained.... I certainly didn't plant it! :-) I have another small plant of this, would like it? PM your address if so.

Root pruning just means cutting away some of the roots, especially the bigger ones, to encourage more of the finer feeding roots, and to keep the top growth/root growth both in check. Also you add fresh compost for the new roots to grow into.

It's very kind of you but to be honest I'm a bit reluctant to start growing bonsai again because of the weevils. For some reason they've left my birch tree alone, but after the upset of loosing all my previous trees I don't want to get attached to any more!lol The weevils seem to love bonsai roots in the restricted pots that are used and the trees and roots suddenly part company before you even realise anything is wrong:(

Hope you're not plagued by weevils too....!

I have a bonsai birch too Louisa, I started it off last year after reading a blog that Sheilabub posted. Thanks for the tip about vine weevils I will keep a check on it now.

Strangely enough, I've just got back from holiday to find one of these growing in my own garden! Will have to pot it up and keep it small, it looks very lovely, if tiny, at the moment:)

Good luck with yours Gralew!

Seems to be doing ok in its pot Louisa. Good luck with yours too.... are you going to Bonsai it? :-)

18 May, 2013

Yes, I'll have a go, I haven't enough room for a full grown rowen, and as it's not cost me anything it won't matter if I lose it. It's time I gave bonsai another go:)
