This var. is ornamental...the robins love the berries tho.

Our robins differ from yours Jane...ours are of the thrush family and they enjoy fruit as well as insects and worms, etc. Do your lovely little robins eat everything as well? Your thrush would probably enjoy your elderberries.

think probs the thrushes but not too sure about robbins now you ask thats why i thought (never knew that) they do eat worms/berries/and insects for sure!!!!

I don't think I've ever seen Elderberry fruits that look quite like this.......and better still that it attracts the birds!

It's a plant I have found growing quite wild on my acres, Paul...This is a native Elder, Sambucus pubens..or Red Berried Elder. It is food for the birds which ripens around the time the young birds are fledging. The shrubs are usually stripped by the birds immediately the berries are red. They must be cooked for human consumption.
