Gomphocarpus physocarpus

Gomphocarpus physocarpus

It is almost time to start clipping the "balls" off this - they contain the seeds which have 'cotton' tops like dandelions, and will float and spread all over the place. Full of latex, which is poisonous, gloves have to be worn.

I know that Monarch Butterflies depend on this species. I am curious if you grow it purposely (and for what) or just cleaning out the "weed" :-)

I did find a Monarch catapillar on it once. I started growing it just as something different, and it now comes up as a volunteer type plant.

:-) Have lots of volunteers of several species myself. Some are welcome others not.
