Don't worry, Katarina - I don't think it'll give me nightmares! I was telling my daughter and son-in-law about it when we visited them on Monday and I decided to find out a bit more. I think it merely confirmed what you said about the various theories as to what might have happened. I only knew the Browning poem (I think many British schoolchildren encounter it at some point) although I think I had probably read the Grimm fairytale, because I read so many. I didn't realise the significance of the Ratcatcher character, though, or know that it was partly based on fact. These things are always fascinating, and of course they attract different explanations as time goes on. The idea of a town losing all its children is horrifying - if indeed that is what happened. Disturbing, but not too much so - sadly, terrible things happen and some a lot more recently than that.
