Palm plant

Recently my palm has grown a purple stalk, I've had it for 3 years and it's never done this before. It seems to have grown 5 inches over the last week...a body know what type of Palm it is and what it's doing? :/
I don't know the type of palm, but it's growing a flowering stalk.
