At last the buds have opened but it has had extra light: 20 watt CFL every night for the last fortnight and it seems to have been effective.

Roy, yes of the leaves at least. There is a small bulb beneath the compost. If you leave your address I will send you one of the seedlings which are visible around the large plant when they go dormant.
