Specie tulip up to 12 inches tall, for well-drained soil in a sunny position. The type has red and white flowers; this is var chrysantha.

Karen - I have whittallii as well, but it's still in bud at present. Hopefully I can post a picture of it in flower in the next few days

It's lovely! It's very similar to one I planted last year in my old garden. Whittallii it was called...maybe not as tall as yours, but similar. Very elegant. I love species tulips! I shall be shopping for some later in the year!
