USS Intrepid, also known as The Fighting "I", is one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. She is the fourth US Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned in August 1943, Intrepid participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, most notably the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Yes I agree Sandra. To think many of them gave up their lives for us without flinching or a second thought astounds me and humbles me. What role models they were for the rest of us to face whatever difficulties we have head on.

I used to love hearing my dad tell me about his time in the Army..but I think he only told me what he thought I should hear..He was stationed in Kent,on the south coast, and responsible, among others, for maintaining all the vehicles etc,so he didn't actually partake in D Day directly..but spent a lot of time in London, during the Blitz..I still have the Telegram he sent to my mum, when the war was over, and he was coming home for good...Demobilisation,or 'Demobbed,'as we called it..
My OH's father was in the Scottish 'Black Watch' regiment, and was sent to Egypt, among other places..He was a cobbler by trade,so responsible for soldiers footwear..He never ever spoke about his time there, but he looked so handsome in his Black Watch tartan kilt..I wish we had thought to ask him,but I don't think he really wanted to talk about it..like many others, they just wanted to get on with their lives..and who can blame them?

Well that's some great memories you have Sandra. Something to cherish and feel proud of. The war was long before my time. That would be interesting to see that telegram. It's a real piece of History.
