Enigmatic Product of The Soil

Looking something like a dollop of fresh, home-made, caramel-candy or like something unmentionable, this was one of many fungal? eruptions around the base of an ornamental flowering-crab? Others were already beginning to dissolve into slime and disappear back into the earth and some had dried up into corky/spongy lumps. Was this a primitive, living organism, just a gummy exudation from the roots of the tree or a mixture of both?
