It does produce fruit but I don't think they are edible.
the thorns are vicious though. It drops its leaves in the height of summer and re-leafs late autumn.

Its common name is fuchsia flowered gooseberry. The fruits are like small tart red gooseberries. A neighbour had one in her garden and it must have been 10' tall by as much in diameter. All of the other neighbours were allowed to pick the fruit as it was a prolific fruit bush. I used to throw away seedlings growing in the garden because of the viscious spines. A new tenant dug it out not realising what it was.

Thats very nice indeed. I've not seen it before. Does it produce berries?
