Symmetry and Sharp Points

After several months of growth this thistle rosette is now ready to send forth a towering stem of leaves with a host of very sharp pointed spines (Never to be forgotten if you have ever blundered into one and felt the extreme pain inflicted on your tender legs) topped by a delicious blue flowery mop. Why the Scots should have chosen this bane of unwary ramblers as an emblem, what with all those kilts and bare legs beats me?
