My Shade Garden

The darkest corner on my property - north facing side of house, under a viburnum opalus. Many plants will bring color to a shade garden but also consider texture, shapes & growth patterns. Hostas really anchor a shade garden bringing all of the above. Notice one variegated hosta has ruffled leaves, the other has flat leaves. They both contrast nicely with the blue hosta in the middle which has heart shaped leaves. Sedum Autumn Joy brings different texture with its succulent leaves and if I'm lucky, late summer flowers. Sporadic bursts of color from impatiens, lily of the valley, azalea & some tulips on the edge where just enough sun reaches. That rhododendron, upper right, took a real beating from the winter storms but it's trying to recover. fingers crossed. I don't have issues with slugs or anything eating the leaves - all the different birds around here see to that. :)

You've got a lovely selection of Hosta's there Paul and I'm sure the Lily of the Valley will quickly make itself at home!

It will look lovely,once everything starts to fill out,Paul,and a good choice for your shaded area..I hope your Rhododendron recovers well after the storm..I'm sure it will,they are very resilient,and it doesn't stop them in the wild..no one to care for them there :o)
