Sunflower

Sunflower

Very majestic looking and great for the bees. Later, the goldfinches will eat the seeds.

I decided to buy only Sunflower hearts this year,Paul,as all the other types, weren't being eaten, despite all the info on which birds preferred what..and now they are all back on the feeders Blue.tits, goldfinches, greenfinches, sparrows and even a Bullfinch, which we have only seen a couple of times, but at least it visits now. even the Robin goes for them,as they are usually ground feeders..no more Niger seeds, etc for our feeder in future..I also have a half Coconut shell filled with a fat and seed mixture which they enjoy as well...We can buy these so cheaply too,so it's easier on my pocket :o)

That sound very good Sandra, I'm sure you'll get lots of visitors for the sunflower hearts. I mean that sounds like gourmet select. You should make lots of feathered friends. I like the idea of using the coconut shell filled with the mixture. What type of fat do you use? I've been making a similar mixture except I use peanut butter instead of fat. Goes over very well especially with woodpeckers.

The hearts seem to be more popular than all the other products I've tried,Paul, and one of the cheapest..and we can buy the half coconut shells ready made up,in most of the £1 shops here, and we have a lot of those now..They all have a bird/pet section...I guess you have similar cheap stores too..Quite a few on Goy make there own,but with melted down fat,or lard as we call it,and add seeds, dried fruit nuts etc.then let it solidify,in whatever container you choose,to hang up..
