Welcome from me too just had to have my Bayleaf tree cut right back the difference of light is amazing.

Welcome to GOY...........Yes, they are very dense.Cutting them back will give you more light in the garden.
Another GOY member has recently had some large Laurels taken out and it has made such a difference (Eirlys, I think it was)
