There are about 500 years between the buildings on either side of the "dates" growing on this tree!

Well in actual fact there are probably more than 500 years between them - as the modern house on the right was built in the 1950s "outside the walls" (there's a hip-high wall that surrounds the town) whereas the defence tower on the left - that is part of the wall - was built in 1200s. It's a bit difficult to describe but the town is built in a kind of spiral with the oldest buildings and the Church at the very top. It's a bit like the circles in Dante's Inferno, with new streets being added over the centuries and radiating downwards, each layer linked with endless steps - hence my house, built in the 500s, is in the last street with the defence wall directly opposite my little garden.
