A deciduous thorny shrub with reddish teardrop shaped leaves and these red berries.

Bathgate: it looks to me as : Ilex verticillata - Winterberry or Deciduous Holly. Google it and see if that could be it.
But there is deciduous Berberis and cotoneaster too.
Mine are evergreen.
