All they needed was deadheading and planting out. Easy peasy 15 minutes for 50p each....I took a photo before I trimmed and planted them and one to show how much better they look after...

I tried Portulaca a few years ago,and they were beautiful..Yes,in full sun,Sheila, ..when we get some! I had mine in pots, and they flowered all summer long.. .I haven't seen them on sale locally since..good luck with the Dianthus, you saved them from a sad end,by the look of them..

I find a lot of the plants seem to be like that, these days..not only the reduced price ones...I will not buy a full priced one in that condition,so it's always first stop at the bargain shelves :o)

They'll be fine, won't they. The stores treat their plants abominably, I can hardly bear to look sometimes. No sale plants in Homebase today but I've come away with 6 Moss Rose, Portulaca. Haven't grown them before.
