Is that a solar light? Your greenhouse looks fabulous in the sunshine ...what's growing in there?

I've taken everything out of the greenhouse, Sandra. It's been so dry and hot that the tomatillos and tomatoes that I had planned to grow in there were drying out and I had no water saved for them. The little stream has been dry since the end of June...and the larger one near the road is a bare trickle.
Yes, it's a reclaimed solar light.. been working for over a year now.

It does get soo hot under glass/ plastic.. Feeling your pain over low water...although ours hast slowed much this year as our summer has had a lot of rain along with the sunshine. I have lids off big plastic drums under many of my larger pots which helps hold on to some of the water. I have dahlias geraniums and petunias this year for sons wedding and they need so much water...but it's nice to actually have lots of flowers for a change.

LOL...I wondered where all our moisture was going! We've had days with a stiff wind and huge cumulus clouds just sucking the moisture out of the lakes and forest...they never dropped a drop on us though! somewhere to the east things are soggy... Wales? ;-)
I always took plenty of water for granted having been raised in Muskoka and later in Cornwall (Ontario) where we were on city water and all I had to do was hook up a garden hose. Our well is a very deep one but our water pressure tells a sad story... the level has dropped so we're being careful. you know the old saying: "You don't miss the water 'til the well runs dry!"

We get clouds coming from the west over the sea from Ireland...but as they reach land the air moves them up and it misses us then rains on the hills to the east.

So much more water aware since we moved here..some days when every one is visiting and there are baths, washing machines and plants we run out. I am looking at ways to store more, we feed from an underground stream so there is plenty there.

A neighbour of mine has a drip system. you might check that out? it involves a storage tank/cistern and water comes literally drop by drop to fill the tank and it's on hold for times of drought or extra usage. I'm sure it won't be hard to find on the net. As a country, we have a lot of the world's fresh water and that means we take water for granted. I remember in highschool one of our teachers told us that in the next century (40 years away at that point) water would be a commodity and we would think nothing of paying for it! We all had such a good laugh at that!

The nursery has been going along nicely and I want to expand but the water is only just keeping up with me. There's plenty of it...but it's all a bit of a mish mash having evolved with us...the plan is a HUGE tank...been spending sofa time researching ...I can see a wick like system would be a better plan than our air lock prone one...

My cousin's cistern system works on the "drip by drip" system.. We also have a neighbour who has a large equipment room in their basement and they have huge portable plastic tanks in metal cages that collect the water and shut off when the tank is full. Their problem was a well that couldn't take family usage, but having the buffer of a drip supply meant they were ok when they had company. I remember my Dad fuming about air locks! so much work and planning and one little glitsch and the whole system goes down! I wish you success.
