Mahonia aquifolium

Mahonia aquifolium

Have got 2 of these in my back garden. Feel that they are adding a real splash of colour at this time of year.

Hi Sue, to be honest I don't know. They were here when we moved in. Both are flowering about the same. Funny, I have a gardening book were I got the name and only said to hubby that ours has more flowers on them then those in book lol.

I saw a reference to a dwarf one a while ago -It was M. aquifoliunm Apollo and I thought then how nice it was.

The Apollo bit jogged my memory so looked back on one of my old blogs that I did last year when I broke my garden fork trying to get the Loveage out. Yes they are Apollo as the one in that blog still had it's label on.

I shoudo have put pne where I planted a Mahonia Soft Caress, and its clearly too windy for it there scorch marks on the leaves already.

Can it be moved? Then you could plant an Apollo there. What I like about it, is 1st you get so many flowers then after tons of purple berries so it's gives interest for a long time.

Pretty sure it could be moved as I only put it there in the autumn. But can't think where else to put it as it didn't much like where it was (it was only in a pot though so it didn't matter). It needs somewhere part shaded and sheltered and those areas are pretty well used up already. Anyway I'll have a think.

Jen, you must be a green-fingered natural as I've never seen this kind of Mahonia looking this pretty! They are usually straggly messy looking specimens with poor flowers. And all your other plants look great too. :)

Thank you Karen, can't take all the credit as I only inherited them in August 2015 but I did cut them back then to make them more compact.

That's what did it! :)
