The biggest threat to this plant is cats who love to rub against it (in the same way as with cat mint). Protect the main stem with a cage of rigid wire mesh, especially when young.

Yes, Andrew, mine WAS twinning around fence trellis. It has today been through the shredder, although I have left the root and a small piece of the main stem. It is definitely a goner.

I have two ,one is against a wall the other on the side of a shed ,I can't say I've ever seen cats near them but then we have so many neighbours cats here they head straight for a nice newly dug up area to do their business which annoys us , I have several cuttings in pots they take quite easily ...

Oh no, mine should look like this but I think after 20++ years mine has finally given up the ghost.
I have small buds at the ends of many stems but they look desiccated although the stems are still whippy and pliable. The main trunk is large and looks quite gnarly.
