Abies (fir) growing in the crack of a boulder

This is the kind of thing that only happens in the wild places! :)

It had a close call! I was clearing weeds to make way for ferns and hosta and I disturbed the moss which was growing in the same crack as the tree! I've seen seedlings or sports growing out of stumps before, but never out of rock! It's a little exposed beside the stream and in the way of my plans but I'm leaving it quite undisturbed! One little bonus for me! lol...

Firs are not my most favourite plants but this baby I could live with, wonder how big it'll get there..

it could be an A. balsamaea or concolor. not sure which it is yet. both balsam and white fir can grow to 30-50 plus feet. here on this stone I would guess it might stay this small for quite a long time, however with the forest around it, and the fact that I'm not going to try to trim the roots it will eventually enclose the rock in it's roots and keep on going! fir are fast growers though, and usually grow 12 to 24 inches per year. My best answer is "I don't really know!" LOL... I'm leaving it strictly to nature but will keep an eye on it!
