I used to have them as part of my native hedge, they took really well to pruning hard, which I did for the first few years.

the day after I pruned I noticed some large black beetles on it. I squished every one I saw... and so far so good. it's flowering. I was going to do the big pruning last year but a little mother robin made a nest in it... so had to wait for this spring.
