I ve been reading for you they like the sun and if you mulch dont let it get near the trunk mulch with high nitrogen they like warm moist weather and here is another tip from a forum
I am a Japanese Gardener and we often apply this method to the Gingko (as a result the height of the tree grows faster).
If you plant your tree where people will walk then you do not want branches lower than head level. Cut all your side branches off when they appear this will rapidly increase height. When the tree reaches head height you can let the side branches grow. This method you can have a 6 foot tree in 3 years. Also tree in pot will never grow quickly and therefore Gingko can be used as bonsai.
