it's yucca. Those leaves are sharp..but the deer are drawn to it. Deer damage happens every winter. along with the freeze/thaw that can lift plants right out of the soil.

Thanks Hywel...snow helps them survive the cold...but when we have weather like we're having now, with very cold periods...then above zero and rain, they lose the insulatory benefits of the snow. Next time the temps take a dip...they're stressed because they're exposed. Makes you appreciate how strong they must be to rebound from it.

Snow can be a wonderful insulator. In the UK it usually falls quite wet, not like your renowned powder snow.
