This flower looks like an iris but isn't. It comes from South Africa where it grows in the highest, alpine zones of the Drakensberg mountains, so is hardy in the UK. Takes dry soils or moist ones, sun or part shade. Two and a half feet tall, it can form a large clump, so keep away from delicate treasures. I've found it better towards the back of a border to mask the foliage when not in flower.
