Thank you for the your info, but does your soil dry out and bake hard in the summer, then crack into small fissures? I never thought ensatas would thrive in those conditions.

Yes it does. And the iris is sandwiched between a box hedge and a small philadelphus so it can't be getting an awful lot of moisture.
