Thank you Hywel. This plant sits on a south facing windowsill so it has had lots of sun this year. It had never had that many flowers open at the same time before. I re potted it into a deeper but not much wider pot. It has shot up to twice the height but not gone out the way. The flowers never lasted more than a day before dying off but these have been open for at least a week. I was worried that I had sent it in to the mode where it thought it was dying and was fighting back by producing lots of flowers to give seeds for the next generation. OH loves his cactus so I will go and give him the good news.

Cacti don't like too big a pot.

It's Gymnocalycium mihanovichii. Native to Paraguay. The flowers never seem to open fully on mine.
