Over night... 12 inches of fresh powder snow!

The ski resorts won't have to make their own snow this year.

I lost the roof vents on my greenhouse to seventy mile an hour winds, Meadow. It's just behind the tree limb in the photo, and the snow is up to the roof on either side. What a mess it's going to be when the melting starts.

The snow is usually still quite deep in the forest in March when I'm doing the sugaring, but most often it is quite gone by late April. last year we had a lot of snow in April and May was terribly cold until almost the end of the month. The transition from winter to summer was instantaneous..or so it seemed. The Ministry of the Environment spokesman is telling us that this spring will not be like the last two... it should be more like the "normal" we've had in decades past. We can put our gardens in on the 24th of May weekend without worry. He's gambling his credibility on weather models that haven't been working for the last few years... is he right? only time will tell us. ;-) personally, I'm so ready for spring. Pleeease let it be!

Lori what a shame you've lost the vents on your greenhouse I hope you didn't lose any plants inside it ? we've had a couple of lovely sunny days almost spring like , not that its any consolation to you ... :o( x

I don't think the vents are too far away, Amy. I've seen part of one vent sticking out of a drift on the far side of the greenhouse...the other one is sure to be somewhere between the gh and the house! Our winter temps are so cold that a free standing greenhouse like mine would cost a fortune to heat... it's just not practical to keep anything in my greenhouse over winter. When I can get near it again I plan to lift it onto a more permanent foundation. at present it's sitting on logs. I also have plans to build a rocket stove out of concrete blocks to help heat it in March/April when I would like to be able to start my garden seedlings in flats. No guarantee of that either... march temperatures can be notoriously unreliable and jet stoves require constant tending. I'm so pleased that you're getting some spring-like temps, Amy. Our weather comes to us from the west coast via the Jet Stream and this winter we've had huge polar incursions that push the JS down into the southern US.. hoping the flow will return to normal models soon. I'm so depressed by the constant COLD. :-( x

Oh Lori, I feel sad for you a little warm weather and sunshine makes your feel so much better .. BTW what is sugaring ? :o) x

thanks for the good vibes, Amy. Sugaring is just another term for tapping trees for maple sap. You can also tap birch trees. brings back memories of my grandad's sugar bush and the sweet steamy air of the sugar shack.
