Blackberry Merton Thornless

Lovely idea.

Do you find it fruits less than the thorny ones? I was discussing this with a local fruit grower at Christmas time and he reckons the thornless ones don't fruit very well. I ditched one last year because the fruit were so tart, but I replaced it with a thornless Tayberry. The farmer said he didn't hold out much hope for a decent crop. Time will tell.

CK, my ones fruit & taste fine, except last year when due to the heat & drought the berries "cooked" before they had chance to properly ripen

This happened on the wild blackberries around here as well so not my cultivation for once

I've wanted a Tayberry but never found one "tame" enough for my small garden. I had thornless Loganberry years ago, and that was prolific, if a bit sharp eaten fresh

From memory the Tayberries at RHS Wisley I've enviously looked at are also prolific. I'll try & have an extra peek this summer to see about thorn less ones
