I was going to move it because it seemed to be in the wrong place but this year it has quite a lot of flower buds showing.

Mine are all in shade or late afternoon sun that s what they prefer Scotsgran . I ve read not to face them east incase the sun comes out opens up the flower then then the frost comes it will damage the flowers.

I think I just needed to be patient because I bought it for about £1.99 from a supermarket when it was only one stem.

Like mine all mine except two which my daughter bought me were just sticks like yours from Aldi I waited 3 years before my first one came to flower the other ones which were sticks I bought with one flower in bloom they soon grow I have cut the first one I bought back three times since I ve had it they like being pruned after flowering when they get big .

That is helpful. I remember Hywel cutting one back so severely I wondered if it would survive. It did and bloomed better than ever.
